Chapter 13

Haley

“How’d it go?” Sara asks as I enter.

“Um.”

I haven’t told her anything about what’s been going on between Jack and me. I’ve complained about how Jack wouldn’t have anything to do with his kid, but I didn’t go into details, and I sure as hell didn’t tell her that he was the hot guy I hooked up with at the dive bar a few months ago.

Jeez, that was months ago? It feels like only a couple of weeks ago I met Jack for the first time. And yet it also feels like we’ve been doing this dance together forever. It’s a lot.

Sara’s lounging on the couch in pajamas, clearly all ready for bed. She was probably waiting up for me because she’s a good friend that way. She frowns at me as I stand there awkwardly, unable to fully lie, my thoughts too much in a whirl to even realize I would have to lie when I got home.

“Everything okay? Haley?” Sara keeps frowning at me.

I set down my purse and take off my coat. “I think I’m in a bit of a complicated situation.”

“A complicated situation? You realize the last time you said that to me it was when you revealed that jerk cheated on you.”

I sigh and join her on the couch. “It’s nothing like that. It’s that… everyone at the party was really crappy to me. Just absolute snobs.”

“I’m not surprised. Isn’t your boss a billionaire?”

“Yeah, but it was worse than that. The way they looked at me… it was like the fact that I’m only twenty-eight was a bad sign.”

“Any particular reason? Did they just think you were in college still or something?”

“No, they thought I had to be someone’s mistress.”

Sara’s eyebrows fly up. “Seriously!?”

“Yeah, but that wasn’t as bad as it was when they realized I was the nanny. They actually treated me better when they thought I was someone’s mistress. But either way, they talked to me like I was dumb.” I grimace. “It made me feel really terrible.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet.”

“My boss was really sweet about it, though.”

“Your boss? The one you’ve been fighting with all this time? I keep waiting for you to give up and quit.”

“He’s… um. He’s actually not that bad.”

Sara frowns at me and sits up a little more. “Is that so?”

I shrug. “He’s. Um. He’s really great, actually. Now that he’s listened to me about his daughter, I… I think he’s a good guy. He’s just stubborn and he’s not used to people telling him when he’s wrong. That’s all. I think we misjudged each other.”

Sara squints at me suspiciously, and, well, she’s got a right to be suspicious. It was one thing when Jack was just a hot guy who was also a dick. I’m used to finding guys attractive who are assholes underneath.

It’s a whole other ballgame when it turns out that Jack is a good guy. And it was one thing when he was a good father to his daughter, but now, he’s also defending me and looking out for me, and I don’t know what to do with it.
